Catering services are made up of 2 main areas, patient catering and retail catering.

Patient catering is delivered using the Cook Chill method. This involves the majority of food being produced in a CPU (Central Production Unit) at Solihull Hospital 4 days in advance of the menu day in question. The patient menu is based on a 2 week menu cycle and is based on ‘choice at point of service’ model, i.e. patients do not need to pre-order in advance. Once food is produced it is portioned into multi packs, delivered to each receiving unit at each of the 3 hospitals. Food is picked and packed at the receiving units on each site and is delivered via insulated boxes to each ward where it is re-heated in a regeneration oven (this is a fan assisted oven unit which also doubles as a serving unit).

Once re-heated, food is served by a hostess at ward level onto plates and then taken to the patient by Nursing/Healthcare staff.

The catering department also operates a number of retails outlets at Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals in the form of one restaurant & 2 coffee shops and one restaurant and one coffee shop respectively. Retails outlets at Heartlands Hospital are operated by commercial providers.

Come Dine With Me Event March 2017 Heartlands Hospital

The Catering Department run ‘Come Dine With Me’ sessions every quarter at each hospital to allow visitors to sample the foods served at ward level. This gives visitors an opportunity to see the range and quality of the food served and feedback is very positive.
